School work: Districts tackle projects large and small

It is sun and fun for students during the summer, but for school personnel there is work to do.

Sikeston R-6 School District is focused on one project and it is a big one: to have the new $11 million Wing Elementary School ready when classes begin Aug. 13.

“It is going very well,” said Sarah Thompson, communications coordinator for the Sikeston R-6 School District. “We believe (construction) will be completed by July 16.”

With five classrooms each set aside for first and second grades and four classrooms each for third and fourth grades, the Wing Elementary, 1123 General George E. Day Parkway, will also include its own gymnasium with stage, art room, music room, cafeteria, library and space for the District’s Eagle program and other classes. Thompson said it will feature top-of-the-line technology and safety features.

This week, Sikeston maintenance personnel worked inside the building setting up access doors and preparing to install security cameras. Outside crews prepared the front and the back entryways.

Thompson said the district is planning an open house at the Matthews Elementary School in August to provide the school’s alumni a final walk through. Another open house will follow to give the public a look at Wing Elementary.
