Grand opening held for new Sikeston elementary school

A grand opening for the new Sikeston elementary school was held on Thursday, August 1.

This is the first brand new elementary school to be built in the Sikeston School District in more than 50 years.

Alecia Jordan is the principal of Wing Elementary and she said she is excited to see the parents and students react the new school.

She said there are a lot of things at this school that are a first for the district, like a designated makers space, innovative technology, a safe space and most importantly a dedicated room for every subject.

"We’re just ready to hit the ground running and ready to use all the tools that this building provides for our kids and just make their year a phenomenal year,” said Jordan.

Officials said the name Wing came from the Matthews family who donated the land, he wanted to name it after his mother and his aunt.

According to Sikeston R-6 Schools on Facebook, the final planning meeting was held on Monday, July 8.
