Sikeston High School students will tackle a true-life problem when they assume the roles of city leaders during the annual “Youth in Government Day.”

On Friday,29 students from Sikeston Senior High School will learn about the jobs of mayor, the city council and city and Board of Municipal Utilities staff as part of the Sikeston Optimist Club’s “Youth in Government Day.” The program, started more than 30 years ago, is designed to promote a greater understanding of local government and the issues elected officials are asked to consider.

This year, students will address a topic currently before the Sikeston City Council: Should the city provide curbside recycling with residential solid waste services.

With Sikeston’s contract for solid waste disposal services expiring in June, the city will soon request a proposal for the provision of recycling service. If residents desire the implementation of curb-side recycling, parameters for this program must be established and included in the proposal being provided to potential vendors.

Youth in Government Day participants will decide if a recycling program is needed; the frequency of trash and recycling pickup; should citizens be required to use vendor-provided trash and recycling totes; and the recommended fee for these additional services.

Students participating as the mayor and city council members are Fadel Alkilani, Fred Thatch, Brylie Noe, Annie Ensor, Kathryn Price, Micah Wallace and Amber Dukes. City and BMU staff will be represented by Allison Miles, Nikki Ramsey, Bryce Bays, Katherine Lape, Emma Grimes, Abbigale Graham, Kylie Hutcheson, Brett Johnson, Will Gilmer, Zhane Robinson, Timothy McHaffie, Sarah Thornton, Leigh Williams, Natalee Fennell, Savannah Smith, Morgan Merrill, Abigail Vaught, Roge Modicue. Members of the public will include Kylie Noe, Michaela Glaus, Emily Limbaugh and Olivia Nash.

Coordinators of the event are Eric Balsam of Sikeston High School, Linda Lowes with the city of Sikeston, and Wende Pruden and Ronda Smith of the Sikeston Optimist Club. Financial sponsors for this event include 148 State Representative Holly Rehder, the Standard-Democrat and First State Community Bank.
